LAS QUEJAS SOBRE EL REGGAETÓN, SEGÚN LOS FEMINISTAS/COMPLAINTS ABOUT 'REGGAETON', ACCORDING TO FEMINISTS

‘El reggaetón’ es un género de música que se originó en la isla Puerto Rico en los años 1990. Su sonido se derivó de una mezcla del ‘reggae’ y el ‘hip hop’. En los últimos años el género ha experimentado un resurgimiento en la industria de música, especialmente en el nivel internacional y por eso crecientemente podemos encontrar más rasgos del reggaetón tales como con la incorporación de letras españolas en las canciones de artistas angloparlantes también.
Pero quiero preguntarte algo ¿si una audiencia no hispanoparlante entendiera las letras, cambiaría sus opiniones sobre el género del reggaetón?
“Si, sin duda”, muchos feministas discutirían.
Al mismo tiempo el reggaetón ha ido aumentando en popularidad alrededor del mundo, el género ha estado sufriendo mucho crítico tales como que es sexista, machista y objetiva a las mujeres también.Aunque los artistas criticados del reggaetón han tratado a defenderse con su derecho a la libertad de expresión y afirmar que sus canciones son obras del arte, su apoyo entre los miembros de la industria de música y sus fans recientemente ha disminuido por varias razones.
Los feministas se quejan que esos videos de las canciones que representan las mujeres como menos e inferiores a los hombres son perjudiciales a la sociedad. Los feministas dirían que no solo es pernicioso el machismo a las mujeres, pero también refuerza estereotipos negativos sobre los hombres que por lo general son falsos e injustos. Los más vulnerables a esta manipulación al discurso de igualdad son los jóvenes influenciables, cuyos pensamientos ya están en desarrollo y no están preparado para comprender las imágenes, las letras ni los significados adultos de las canciones, mucho menos separarlas de la realidad.
Asimismo, la existencia del machismo es evidente dentro la industria también. En 2017 una encuesta averiguó que 83.2% de artistas de reggaetón fueron hombres y las mujeres productoras representaron solo 2% de todos los productores. Mientras estas estadísticas sobre la falta de representación femenina entre la industria son alarmantes, no son una sorpresa tampoco. Sin embargo, nos proporcionan más pruebas de esta industria dominado por hombres necesita cambiar y responder a las demandas de los feministas.
El problema es que la audiencia angloparlante no entienda la gravedad de las implicaciones causadas por los reggaetoneros en la sociedad porque se protegen por su falta de conocimiento sobre el significado de algunas letras. Te pido que traduzcas las letras de tu canción favorita y luego preguntarte si ¿te sientes representado u ofendido?

Over the last couple of years reggaeton has experienced as resurgence in the music industry, particularly on the international level and because of this increasingly so we are able to find more and more traces of reggaeton, such as with the incorporation of Spanish lyrics, in the songs of English speaking artists.
But consider this… do you think that the opinions of non-Spanish speaking audiences would change at all about reggaeton if they actually understood the meaning the Spanish lyrics?
“Yes, without a doubt” many feminists would argue.
At the same time reggaeton has been increasing in popularity around the world, the genre has also been suffering from a lot of criticism accusing it of being sexist, misogynistic and objectifying women.
Although the reggaeton artists that were criticised have tried to defend themselves calling it their right to freedom of expression and claim that their songs are works of art, their support amongst members of the music industry and their fans has decreased recently for various reason.
Feminists complain that those music videos of songs which portray women as being less and inferior to men are highly damaging to society. Feminists would say that male chauvinism is not only harmful to women but also it reinforces negative stereotypes about men that are for the most part false and unfair. Those most vulnerable to this manipulation of the discourse on equality and inequality are the impressionable young people, whose minds and thoughts are still developing and are not mature enough to understand the images, lyrics and adult meaning behind these songs, let alone separate them from reality.
Additionally, male chauvinism exists within this industry too. In 2017, a survey found that 83.2% of reggaeton artists were men and that females made up only 2% of all reggaeton music producers. While this statistics about the lack of female representation in the industry are alarming, they are neither a surprise. However, they provide us with further evidence that this male dominated industry needs to change and respond to the calls of feminists and other critics.
The problem is that English-speaking audience don’t understand the seriousness of the societal implications that these reggaeton artists cause because they are protected by their lack of awareness and understanding about the meaning of some lyrics. I ask it of you to translate the lyrics of your favourite reggaeton song and then ask yourself whether you feel represented or offended by it.
