EDITOR NOTE
I'd like to welcome you all to the 10th edition of The Language Exepress magazine. I think that this edition is the perfect way to round off the year with some fascinating articles ranging from learning advice, very valuable to those doing January exams, to Christmas experiences in France. This edition is special in many ways and the most notable reason being that some of the articles have been translated into English to allow for a parallel text structure.
The thought behind this is that you will be able to profit more from the language-learning experience and gives an opportunity for translators to practise their skills. I cannot thank our teaching assistants enough who have worked hard translating these articles and of course our contributors, without whom our editions would look very bare. Thank you all for your help this year. On that note, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and the best of luck in the New Year.

It was during a tear filled eleven-hour flight from San Francisco to Paris that I realised I would be happier living abroad for the rest of my life. This was my epiphany moment after having spent nine months studying the English language at Mills College, CA and living with an African American host family. So, what do languages mean to me? In short, a way to reinvent yourself. How?

Como la violencia, la polémica y el activismo chileno entran en una cuarta semana caótica en la capital, Santiago, parece que el gobierno ha perdido el control sobre las manifestaciones espontáneas que han estallado desde Iquique en el norte del país hasta Puerto Montt, situado en el borde de la Patagonia chilena.

‘El reggaetón’ es un género de música que se originó en la isla Puerto Rico en los años 1990. Su sonido se derivó de una mezcla del ‘reggae’ y el ‘hip hop’. En los últimos años el género ha experimentado un resurgimiento en la industria de música, especialmente en el nivel internacional y por eso crecientemente podemos encontrar más rasgos del reggaetón tales como con la incorporación de letras españolas en las canciones de artistas angloparlantes también.

La France a la réputation d’être une nation de manifestants ; une tradition qui découle de la Révolution Française, et tout récemment les Gilets Jaunes ont encore une fois fait les gros titres en manifestant pour marquer une année depuis le début du mouvement.

Es gibt unübersetzbare Wörter aus der ganzen Welt, die in anderen Sprachen schwer oder kaum zu ersetzen sind. Man spricht manchmal von Wörtern oder Begriffen, die ,,typisch“ für eine Sprache’’ sind, denn sie verweisen auf die verschiedenen kulturellen Differenzen in jedereiner jeden Sprache.
