As a tutor, I usually reflect on my own attitude as a language learner when I was the age of my students. And I always reach the same conclusion. When I was doing my BA in English Studies back in my hometown, being fluent in English was a goal in the long run, but the most imminent one was to pass my language exams.

The months that preceded the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 gave Portuguese a new prominence. These global events went in tandem with a period of economic boom in Brazil. Work and investment opportunities drew attention to the country, its culture and its official language – often mistakenly presumed to be Spanish.

On the 9th November, we had the very exciting opportunity to interview Virginia, who studied Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at the University of Exeter. Having graduated with a first class degree in 2014, Virginia joined the Telefonica graduate scheme, travelled and volunteered all over the world, has completed a 2 year masters degree and is now on the Civil Service Fast Stream.

Actualmente en España, he podido a comparar las diferencias entre los dos sistemas de educación del Reino Unido y España. El del Reino Unido ha recibido muchas críticas desde sus inicios del siglo XXI. Las tasas subieron a £9000 en 2012 que creó un clamor de la población estudiantil.

Pendant mon année à l’étranger, j’ai été inspirée à commencer à faire des gâteaux. À Bruxelles, j’ai découvert les spéculoos (un type de biscuit sablé aux épices) et les gaufres au chocolat fondu. À Paris, j’ai goûté les chouquettes et les cannelés.

Cet octobre le Comité des droits de l’homme a remis en cause la loi de 2011 qui interdit la dissimulation du visage dans l’espace public. Ce cas a été présenté aux Nations Unies (ONU) par deux femmes qui ont reçu une amende pour cause de port du niqab dans un endroit public.

A première vue, l’Oman ne paye pas de mine. Par la vitesse brutale de l’avion on dirait que le pays semble poussiéreux et très… orange. Néanmoins, la vie d’Oman existe pour son peuple, et une fois qu’on a mit les pieds dans ce pays on peut apprécier son énergie incroyable.

Avant de mon arrivée, je ne savais pas exactement où habiter. Le quartier d’étudiants est Ixelles, particulièrement l’alentours du cimetière. J’ai fini par vivre à Ixelles et je me suis senti en sécurité, en plus c’était très pratique de ne pas être trop loin de l’université.
